StrawmarySmith was nominated for the Liebster Award! I’m so honored to accept this award and pass it on to fellow bloggers.
The Liebster Award is an award that is passed from blogger to blogger in order to help readers – like yourselves – find new blogs to follow! StrawmarySmith was nominated by Sherri & Gregory of Watch Learn Eat, and it’s my pleasure to accept this award and pass it on to a few more!
It’s been almost a year since I’ve launch StrawmarySmith.com, and it’s been a crazy ride! But making friends with new bloggers has definitely been one of the highlights of creating this food blog. This award is one of the ways we help support each other, and I love that you all as readers get to see it in action!
Here’s how it goes: A blogger can nominate up to 10 other bloggers, then create a post announcing the nomation. The nominated bloggers should have less than 3,000 followers. The first blogger then asks 10 questions to these bloggers. If the nominated bloggers accept, then they create their own post accepting the nomination & linking back to the first blogger, answering the 10 questions, then nominating more bloggers and asking a new set of questions. The award keeps getting passed on so that readers can discover new blogs.
Here are the 10 questions that were asked to me. Eep, I feel like I’m doing a TV interview! On the plus side, I’m in my PJs and didn’t have to go through hair and makeup to do it 😉
Describe your blog in 5 words or less.
Cooking for two – made simple!
What led you to start blogging?
This is a quick two part story. First, my friends and family began asking me for recipes. I would always answer with a recipe, but tell them take out this, add that, cook for less time… It was never a quick “Here’s a recipe link!” thing. Second, my younger sister, Jasmine, suggested I make a food blog to post my favorite homemade recipes so everyone would have a place to find them. My Instagram handle was already StrawmarySmith, so she suggested it be my blog name. Tada, a blog was born!
How did you learn to cook?
Just a few short years ago, all I ate was frozen food and boxed mac & cheese. In my mid-twenties, it finally got boring. I started searching for copycat recipes of my favorite dishes online, like Olive Garden’s alfredo pasta and CPK’s potato leek soup. I changed those recipes and morphed them into my own (Creamy Alfredo Sauce and Herbed Potato Leek Soup), then did that with more and more recipes until I started to understand how cooking and flavoring a dish actually worked. And I’m still learning more every day!
What is your signature dish?
My signature dish is definitely my Chicken Parmesan (recipe coming soon!). I make it at every dinner party and the guests go nuts! The first time I made it was for our whole family at my husband Greyson’s birthday dinner a few years back. It was the first time I ever made something at home that made everyone at the table say “mmmmm,” and I’ll never forget that moment.
What is your favorite part about blogging?
My absolute favorite thing about blogging is getting comments from readers saying that they tried my food and loved it. It makes me giddy for the rest of the day, and I never get tired of hearing it! It’s like I can hear that person say “mmmmm” from the other side of the world. (Yes, “mmmmm” is my favorite human sound!)
Who is your “food” idol?
Giada De Laurentiis. She’s humble, beautiful, and incredibly talented. As you can tell, I’ve adapted quite a few of her recipes on here! Although I’m Middle Eastern, I’ve always had an affinity for Italian flavors. That’s why I’m inclined to try Giada’s new recipes and I own almost every single one of her books!
What is the one place in the world you would love to visit?
Armenia. I’ve never been there, but it’s where my parents and all of my ancestors were born and raised. I’ve heard it’s beautiful, and I hope I get to see it someday.
What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
Once, when I was a kid, I stood too close to the stove and the back of my hair caught fire. Luckily my mom rushed me to the sink and put it out in time for me to have some consolation pancakes.
What are your hobbies?
Other than cooking, I’ve been playing the PC game “The Sims” since it first came out in the 90’s. I also enjoy other sedentary activities, namely watching Netflix. (Is that a hobby? If it is, then I think all of America collectively has that hobby.)
What is your favorite song?
Honestly, I don’t have just one favorite, but I have fond memories with so many songs! One of my favorites is “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley, which was Greyson and my first dance at our wedding.
And now it’s time for the nominees… Drumroll, please!
